About The Position

This position performs all functions related to inpatient (IP) coding services. The individual is responsible and accountable for the accuracy and timeliness of coding and DRG assignments, as well as the effective utilization of systems for coding functions. Key aspects of the role include maintaining relationships with the Coding Manager/Supervisor, CDI team, Business Office, and Case Management staff. The primary duty involves coding inpatient records, including DRG assignment and validation. The coder must also maintain knowledge of outpatient coding to assist as needed and utilize the 3M Encoder to accurately code and classify medical records according to ICD-10-CM/PCS. Continuous maintenance of performance skills is also required.

Requirements

  • Three to Five years coding experience required
  • Advanced training in medical coding (ICD10-CM/PCS, CPT and APC).
  • Medical terminology, anatomy and physiology required.
  • Computer skills.
  • Ability to read medical reports, interpret lab values pertinent to coding diagnoses, abstract pertinent information from records and to provide meaningful information by telephone or letter in replying to inquiries.
  • Ability to work remotely. Must be able to provide high speed internet at place of residence at the expense of the employee, with a work area that is in adherence to privacy and security policies and procedures.
  • Must demonstrate commitment and adherence to STHS’s Compliance Program and Code of Conduct through compliance with all policies and procedures, the Code of Conduct, attendance at required training and immediately reporting suspected compliance issue(s) to the Compliance Officer.
  • High School diploma, GED, or Higher Education required.
  • Certification: AHIMA: RHIT, RHIA, CCS, or CCA; or AAPC Coding Certification required.

Nice To Haves

  • Inpatient coding experience
  • Degree (Medical Records or Healthcare related field) or Coding Education Certificate from an accredited vocational school/college preferred.
