About The Position

The position involves coding primarily for acute hospital inpatient, skilled nursing facilities (SNF), and rehabilitation for the purpose of accurate reimbursement, research, and compliance with federal regulations. The coder will also handle coding for ambulatory, emergency room/urgent care, interventional radiology, and same-day surgery records as needed. The role requires reviewing the entire medical record to code diagnoses and procedures using the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) and Current Procedure Terminology (CPT) classifications. The coder will query physicians for clarification when there is uncertainty in the documentation and will analyze and review records for completeness. Active participation in the Clinical Documentation Improvement Team (CDI Team) is also expected.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Health Information Management or AAS in Health Information Technology.
  • Certification as an RHIA or RHIT; Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) preferred.
  • Six (6) months coding experience in an acute care facility preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding systems.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computers and software.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain credentials by meeting AHIMA continuing education requirements.
  • Participate in CDI Team training and meetings.
  • Take and successfully pass a CH coding test.
  • Review medical records for completeness and accuracy.
  • Code diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10-CM and CPT classifications.
  • Collaborate with medical staff, department managers, CDI Specialists, and Finance.
  • Utilize computer systems to enter diagnoses, procedures, and patient data.
