The Code Inspector C (Illegal Dumping) position at the City of Austin involves enforcing city codes and regulations related to illegal dumping and nuisance complaints. The role requires proactive engagement in cleaning illegal dumping sites, conducting investigations, and coordinating with property owners and other city departments to ensure compliance with applicable codes. The inspector will also attend neighborhood meetings and communicate with the community regarding code enforcement issues.

  • Determine if violations are present at reported properties and enforce residential, commercial, and multifamily complex nuisance complaints.
  • Enforce moderate to complex substandard housing complaints and zoning complaints.
  • Advise Code Inspectors through all phases of case management and field inspections.
  • Conduct investigations on reported property code violations, including interviews with tenants, neighbors, contractors, and property owners.
  • Perform research of reported property to determine ownership, current occupants, and extent of violations.
  • Refer code violations to appropriate departments or agencies and evaluate research findings for enforcement action.
  • Coordinate the improvement or remedy of violations with property owners and other City departments.
  • Document all actions taken from initial investigation through compliance or referral.
  • Prepare complete cases for administrative, quasi-judicial, and judicial enforcement, including providing witness testimony.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding registered complaints and results.
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
  • Four years of experience in code enforcement, code administration, building inspections, or related fields, including two years of case management experience.
  • Valid Texas driver license within thirty days of hire.
  • Registered as a Code Enforcement Officer with the State of Texas within one year of employment.
  • International Code Council (ICC) Zoning Inspector Certification or ability to obtain within six months of employment.
  • International Code Council (ICC) Property Maintenance Inspector Certification or ability to obtain within six months of employment.
  • Familiarity with municipal and technical codes.
  • Strong communication and technical writing skills with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to travel to more than one work location.
