Code:Grow Summer Intern (paid)
About The Position
The DPL Foundation is seeking a highly organized, proactive and community engaged individual to join our team and help lead a Summer Program called Code: Grow Neighborhood for youth ages 5-13. The Summer Programming Intern will be responsible for leading tech focused gardening courses for youth at two separate garden sites on Detroit’s east side three days a week from June - August. A week of instructor training orientation will take place June 15-19th and the Program will begin for students after orientation. This position reports directly to the Director of Code:Grow. The goal of the Code: Grow Neighborhood program is to create a foundation in digital literacy and computational thinking by using code to support their gardens. We teach introductory physical and computational programming skills using Microsoft's Make Code microbit lessons. Free weekly sessions take place in Detroit garden spaces where students will help plant and tend to gardens, all while completing tech based experiments to create building blocks for digital literacy through youth specific computer code on their microbits.
Requirements
- High school diploma or working towards a high school diploma with appropriate work permit and experience working in a professional setting.
- Experience working with youth, and interacting with community organizations.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, email, and organizational skills.
- Proficient in using and navigating Google Workspace applications and Microsoft Office Suite
- Knowledge or interest in organic gardening/farming/food sovereignty.
- Passion for learning new skills and ability to adapt and be flexible.
- Red Cross Safety Certification (not required but needs to complete before program begins)
- Reliable transportation to and from work sites.
Nice To Haves
- Some experience with coding languages such as Scratch or Python is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Lead youth tech and garden sessions three days a week. (minimum)
- Responsible for setting up the program in advance of student arrival so that instruction can begin and end on time.
- In charge of clean up after the program and proper storage of materials for the next program day.
- Create a safe educational environment for youth to learn and have fun.
- Monitor activities of participants to ensure safety while they are on site.
- Assist with the preparation of reports and presentations for internal and external audiences.
- Be a kind, professional point of contact for parents and youth participating in the program.
- Connect with the general public and program partners regarding general organization inquiries, programs, or events.
- Coordinate the logistics for supplies, program partners and facilities for programs
- Help organize the end of the season garden party/celebration of learning.
