About The Position

The position involves systematic and proactive inspections and monitoring to ensure enforcement of health and safety, nuisance abatement, and zoning compliance with the NLR Nuisance Abatement Code. The goal is to safeguard the stock of decent, safe, and sanitary properties within the City. The essential duties include making block by block inspections of properties, determining ownership, sending written notices for violations, conducting joint inspections, and resolving complaints. The list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position.

Requirements

  • High school diploma (or GED) and four years of directly related experience (such as law enforcement); OR a Bachelor's Degree in a related field; OR certification in a related field and two years directly related experience; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A Class D driver's license and a good driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Makes systematic, proactive on-site inspections of exteriors and yards of properties for compliance with City ordinances.
  • Determines ownership and conducts any necessary investigation.
  • Sends written notices to owners of all violations found.
  • Re-inspects to assess degree of compliance.
  • Conducts joint inspections with other inspectors when violation involves overlapping areas of authority.
  • Responds to and resolves complaints as required.
  • Issues citations and prepares complete and accurate written documentation describing all enforcement and condemnation investigative activities.
  • Completes forms and maintains daily logs and files.
  • Prepares and maintains other records of code enforcement activities as required.
  • Ensures compliance with state and local regulations regarding nuisance abatement and legal notices.
  • Attends court and provides testimony.
  • Provides information to the public and city officials concerning City nuisance abatement codes and ordinances.
  • Makes referrals to other City departments as necessary.
