The Code Enforcement Officer in Training, I or II position is responsible for ensuring compliance with building codes and ordinances in Yoakum, TX. This role involves reviewing plans and applications for permits, enforcing various housing and nuisance regulations, and coordinating with contractors and property owners to achieve compliance. The position requires strong communication skills and the ability to represent the city in legal matters related to code enforcement.

  • Review plans and applications for approval for issuance of permits to ensure compliance with codes and ordinances.
  • Ensure buildings and other structures are constructed safely and effectively according to approved plans and specifications.
  • Enforce Housing and Dangerous/Substandard Building Ordinance, Abandoned and Junk Vehicle regulations, and other nuisance ordinances.
  • Coordinate with contractors and property owners to gain compliance with various ordinances.
  • Enforce Land Use, Zoning, and Subdivision ordinances and regulations.
  • Interpret codes and ordinances and develop procedures to assure compliance from contractors and property owners.
  • Ensure construction activities are properly licensed and permitted.
  • Maintain complete records of all work performed and prepare reports periodically.
  • Represent the City in court and before boards in matters regarding codes and ordinances.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License.
  • Good public relations and communication skills - both verbal & written.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge.
  • Ability to perform all related manual tasks.
  • Bilingual preferred but not required.
  • Experience in building trades or building inspections preferred.
  • Certification as a Basic Code Enforcement Officer.
