About The Position

The Code Compliance Specialist 1 position within the Division of Building Standards & Codes is responsible for ensuring compliance with building and fire codes through training, investigations, and audits. This role involves delivering training to Code Enforcement Officials and Building Safety Inspectors, conducting formal investigations, and providing regional support across New York State. The specialist will also review and analyze local laws and ordinances, prepare reports, and recommend changes to regulations and codes.

Requirements

  • Current certification as a Code Enforcement Official pursuant to Title 19 NYCRR, Part 434 or Part 1208.
  • Bachelor's or higher degree in architectural engineering, architecture, civil engineering, construction technology, electrical engineering, fire protection engineering, fire protection technology, or mechanical engineering and two years of full-time qualifying experience.
  • Associate degree in a related field and four years of full-time qualifying experience as described.
  • Six years of full-time qualifying experience in enforcement, inspection, development, or teaching of building or fire codes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in delivering training to large groups.
  • Familiarity with the Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Codes and the State Energy Code.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in conducting formal investigations and refer matters to the Office of Administrative Hearings.
  • Conduct audits for training requirements for Code Enforcement Officials and Building Safety Inspectors.
  • Work on course development, revisions, and updates by specified deadlines.
  • Deliver training online and in large groups (300-400 students) and mentor other staff in their presentation of class material.
  • Provide regional support across the state in training, technical assistance, and direct enforcement as assigned.
  • Review, analyze, prepare written reports, and work with counsel to recommend new or revised provisions of law, regulation, or code.
  • Review local laws and ordinances governing building construction.
