About The Position

The City of Birmingham is seeking a qualified and motivated Code Compliance Officer to ensure a safe and healthy environment by enforcing property codes, sanitation ordinances, and regulations. This role involves investigating complaints related to housing, environmental hazards, inoperable vehicles, noxious weeds, and illegal dumping. The officer will inspect neglected properties for occupancy safety, address violations, and interact with the public, providing guidance on corrective actions and issuing warnings or stop orders as necessary.

Requirements

• Driver's license.
• Experience providing information to the public, including difficult or irate individuals.
• Experience gathering and organizing documentation for written reports.
• Experience performing inspection work for conformance to building and sanitation codes.

Nice To Haves

• Possession of state license in home building or a building trade.
• Possession of state/national certification in remodeling, renovation, and painting (RRP).
• Coursework in Public Administration, Criminal Justice, or Engineering.
• Possession of International Code Council (ICC) certifications.

Responsibilities

• Investigate complaints related to housing and environmental hazards.
• Inspect properties for occupancy safety and compliance with municipal codes.
• Document inspections, enforcement actions, and photographic evidence.
• Interact with the public, including citizens and property managers, to provide guidance on corrective actions.
• Issue warnings or stop orders as necessary for code violations.
• Prepare written reports based on inspections and findings.
• Provide testimony in court regarding code violations.
