Position Overview EA is offering an exciting internship opportunity for Master’s and PhD students in Coastal Engineering or closely related fields to support our Coastal Resilience practice in Honolulu, Hawaii. This internship provides meaningful, hands-on experience developing science-based solutions to protect and restore coastal environments throughout the Pacific. The internship will run full-time (40 hours/week) for 10–12 weeks over the summer, with the potential to continue part-time during the fall. Candidates must currently reside in Hawaii.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program in Coastal Engineering, Civil Engineering (with a coastal focus), Environmental Engineering, or a related field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in both field and office environments
  • Demonstrated interest in coastal processes, shoreline management, permitting, or climate resilience

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with U.S. coastal or nearshore environmental permitting frameworks
  • Experience or coursework in coastal structure design, wave modeling, sediment transport, CAD/GIS, or hydrodynamic modeling
  • Experience working with Native Hawaiian organizations
  • Willingness to travel as needed, travel will be limited and will primarily consist of day trips

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and permitting of nature-based coastal engineering solutions
  • Support restoration efforts for wetlands, dunes, and other coastal habitats
  • Contribute to climate resilience and adaptation strategies for nearshore environments
  • Participate in sediment management assessments, wetland evaluations, and coastal preservation activities
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of engineers, scientists, and planners
  • Assist with coastal data analysis, engineering design documentation, modeling tasks, and technical report preparation
