The Coastal Ecologist Lead (Research Technician III) will work under the general direction of the Principal Investigator, leading research projects and overseeing daily lab and field research activities. Responsibilities include planning and implementing field and laboratory experiments, supervising sample processing, managing lab organization, and conducting data management and statistical analysis. The position is temporary and will end on or before September 30, 2025, with the possibility of early termination based on grant funding.

  • Prepare detailed plans for study for research projects, including development of protocols and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Acquire data from ecological studies, conduct data analysis, and interpret data.
  • Prepare graphic representations of study results for distribution to research partners.
  • Oversee and advise student researchers.
  • Write and maintain protocols.
  • Organize and supervise the work of a small team.
  • Maintain the function of critical laboratory equipment.
  • Organize, plan, and facilitate lab meetings.
  • Maintain lab space in an organized and clean manner.
  • Manage chemical inventory and safety training documentation.
  • Supervise a small team of student trainees on standard laboratory practices.
  • Provide guidance on data compilation and analysis.
  • Develop and implement training modules on responsible conduct of research.
  • Report findings to the Principal Investigator.
  • Present research outcomes at conferences.
  • Contribute to writing reports and manuscripts.
  • Thorough knowledge of research techniques and reporting.
  • General knowledge of machine learning techniques and data programming.
  • Ability to reason logically and think creatively on research problems.
  • Experience in technical research or statistical analysis for at least three years, including one year in data interpretation and graphic presentation.
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university.
  • Graduate degree in ecology, marine biology, or related field.
  • Experience in field techniques for intertidal and subtidal ecological studies, particularly in San Francisco Bay.
  • At least 4 years of research experience.
  • Strong ability in data visualization and statistical analysis.
  • Experience providing research training for undergraduates and graduate students.
  • Prior experience as a lab manager.
