About The Position

The program of Intercollegiate Athletics is organized and conducted as an integral part of the total educational program of the University. Academic excellence and athletic accomplishments go hand in hand at Sacramento State. There are three separate and unique missions in this program: to contribute to the educational objectives of the University; to provide a healthy, competitive athletic experience to individual student-athletes; to serve as a public relations vehicle within the community. The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics offers both academic courses and an intercollegiate athletics program. Academic courses offer the opportunity for individuals to gain knowledge and understanding in a particular area of expertise related to intercollegiate athletics. Sacramento State has made a strong commitment to the achievement of national excellence at the NCAA Division I level. It also is committed to maintaining an equitable program between men and women. Intercollegiate Athletics are members of the Big Sky, Big West, Western Athletic Conference, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and American Athletic Conferences. http://hornetsports.com/landing/index Appointments will be made as one of two classifications (Coaching Specialist or Coaching Assistant) depending upon contract length and rate of pay. Regardless of classification, the working title of this position shall be Assistant Coach. Assistant Coach appointment is considered a FLSA exempt position that may qualify for full benefits and may have a less than full-time time-base. However, the number of hours worked per week throughout the period of employment will vary depending on needs of the department, and exempt employees do not receive overtime pay. Appointment is non-tenured and renewable annually dependent upon satisfactory performance, budget considerations, enrollment, and programmatic need. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree, from an accredited institution of higher education or TWO (2) or more years of work experience coaching
  • 1-2+ years’ of experience coaching in sport applying to
  • Knowledge of NCAA Rules and regulations
  • Proven ability to establish good rapport and effective working relationships with student-athletes, administrators, faculty, staff and the community
  • Sound judgement, discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Knowledge of the respective sports' skills, strategies, and teaching progressions
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record at the time of appointment. Before operating a vehicle on state business, the applicant must complete and sign the University’s vehicle use agreement
  • Ability to work during normal business hours, evenings, and weekends

Nice To Haves

  • 1+ years’ of experience coaching given sport at the collegiate level
  • 1+ years’ of experience coaching given sport at the Division I level

Responsibilities

  • Recruit academically and athletic ally qualified, full-time student-athletes to participate in the program.
  • Plan, organize and facilitate the on-going development of practices, competitions and the athletic programming/activities of the program in order to build a cohesive and competitive program.
  • Teach and lead student-athletes including a demonstrated ability to work with a diverse, academically selective student population.
  • Promote student development activities that include team bonding and study program in support of academic progress and graduation of student-athletes.
  • Maintain knowledge of, and compliance with, in accordance with NCAA, Conferences, and California State University, Sacramento rules and regulations.
  • Work schedule will include evenings and weekends.
  • Demonstrated ability to advance the Athletic Department and University toward diversity and gender equity.
