Co-Op - Mechanical Engineer

VEIRWoburn, MA

About The Position

VEIR is enabling a new generation of compact, efficient, high-power, and long-distance power delivery solutions, solving bottlenecks that exist across the entire electricity value chain, from generation through to data center server racks. VEIR's low voltage superconducting solutions are enabling new power delivery architectures in the world’s largest data centers and our higher voltage solutions are poised to revolutionize the development of electricity transmission and distribution lines. VEIR is preparing for rapid growth as we seek to solve critical challenges facing data center developers, electricity generation developers, and utilities around the world. The Role VEIR's Heat Transfer and System Integration Engineering team is entering a high-tempo testing phase this summer and fall, with three test setups running simultaneously and additional setups in active development. We are looking for a motivated Mechanical Engineering co-op or intern to join the team as an engineer in training, contributing directly to test stand development, assembly, and execution across termination and terminal sub-assembly programs. This is a hands-on, engineering-level role. You will work alongside VEIR engineers on physical mock-up design, procedure development, and integrated assembly testing across a product line that sits at the intersection of mechanical, thermal, and electrical systems. Target start date is after May 18, 2026, with an expected duration of 3 to 6 months. This position is available as a co-op (preferred) or internship.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a Mechanical Engineering undergraduate or graduate program, or recent graduation
  • Hands-on experience with physical fabrication, lab work, or hardware testing through coursework, personal projects, or prior work experience
  • Familiarity with mechanical design fundamentals: tolerances, materials, and basic structural and thermal concepts
  • Comfort working with hand tools, measurement equipment, and mechanical assemblies in a lab or workshop environment
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and assembly documentation
  • Strong written communication skills for contributing to test procedures and engineering documentation
  • Hands-on and energized by building and testing physical hardware
  • Detail-oriented, with a process-disciplined approach to test execution and data recording
  • Adaptable and composed when priorities shift or issues arise during testing
  • Proactive about asking questions and flagging concerns early rather than waiting for problems to compound
  • Collaborative and comfortable working in a fast-moving environment alongside engineers across disciplines
  • Intellectually curious about how complex electromechanical systems work, even when the technology is new to you

Responsibilities

  • Execute component-level testing of bushing assemblies, including setup, instrumentation, and data capture
  • Support feedthrough performance validation across relevant operating conditions
  • Contribute to electrical and thermal characterization of current lead assemblies
  • Assist in mechanical and electrical validation of terminal and flex connector assemblies
  • Execute multilam terminal component-level evaluation and document findings
  • Design and develop a physical mock-up termination model using steel, plastic, and wood components to support fit-checking and assembly procedure development
  • Support integrated termination assembly testing using first article vessels, contributing to setup, execution, and data capture
  • Help identify and respond to issues that arise during testing
  • Help design, build, and commission test stands supporting the above workstreams
  • Contribute to written test procedures and associated engineering documentation
  • Maintain organized test records throughout the program

Benefits

  • Healthcare coverage with 100% employer paid premiums for medical, dental, and vision
  • 401(k) Retirement Savings Program
