The CNC Programmer creates machining instructions. This work often includes reviewing three-dimensional computer-aided/automated design (CAD) blueprints, determining where to cut, and other calculations. The Programmer then translates the instructions into a computer aided/automated manufacturing (CAM) program. The Programmer and/or the Operator of the machine check the program through first piece run off and first piece inspection approval. Other responsibilities include creating setup sheets with tooling and work-holding details, creating programs to control the operation sequence and cycling of CNC turning and milling centers, utilizing drawings or CAD models to support program development, and utilizing CAM software to produce programs. The role also supports process optimization and machine utilization with updates as necessary, provides input on process decisions and strategies, and requires experience performing full set-ups, program edits, and holding tolerances as tight as +/- .0001". The position demands a complete understanding of machine control management, cutting tool technology, measurement tool usage, and work-holding strategies. Effective communication skills and troubleshooting abilities are essential, along with the ability to read prints and update paperwork accurately. The role is within a climate-controlled facility and involves various physical tasks, including lifting and operating machinery, with comprehensive training provided.
