About The Position

The CNC Operator / Prototyper is responsible for programming, setting up, operating, and troubleshooting CNC machines to produce high-precision prototypes and low-volume production parts. This role works closely with Engineering, Tooling, and Production teams to support product development, process improvements, and rapid prototyping initiatives. The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, mechanically inclined, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, problem-solving environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical or vocational training preferred
  • 3+ years of CNC machining experience, including setup and operation
  • Experience machining prototype or low-volume, high-precision parts
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and CAD drawings
  • Working knowledge of G-code and CNC programming fundamentals
  • Proficiency with precision measurement tools
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with CAD/CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360, SolidWorks CAM, or similar)
  • Experience with multi-axis CNC machines
  • Background in plastics, injection-molded components, or tooling environments
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing or continuous improvement methodologies

Responsibilities

  • Set up, program, and operate CNC machines (mills, lathes, or multi-axis equipment as applicable) to manufacture prototype and short-run parts
  • Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, and technical specifications
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Tooling to develop, refine, and optimize prototype designs
  • Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, and materials for prototype builds
  • Modify CNC programs as needed to improve part quality, efficiency, or manufacturability
  • Perform first-article inspections and verify dimensional accuracy using precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, CMMs, gauges)
  • Troubleshoot machining issues related to tooling, materials, programs, or machine performance
  • Maintain accurate documentation related to programs, setups, and prototype revisions
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to machining processes and prototype turnaround time
  • Follow all safety, quality, and company procedures
