About The Position

Kirby Built Products is looking for an experienced CNC Lead Machinist! The CNC Lead specializes in the operation, preventative maintenance, and training on horizontal CNC machines—is responsible for developing the technical code that drives complex, multi-axis manufacturing processes, and overseeing the CNC department. This role requires specific expertise in 3/4-axis operations often associated with horizontal mill configurations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED is the minimum; an Associate’s degree in manufacturing technology or a related engineering field is highly preferred.
  • Typically requires 2–5+ years of experience in CNC programming, specifically with multi-axis horizontal equipment.
  • Advanced knowledge of CAM platforms (Mastercam, SolidWorks) and simulation software.
  • Strong proficiency in shop math, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and lift up to 50 lbs
  • Visual acuity for close inspection of machined parts and reading technical diagrams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in high-volume or high-mix manufacturing environments
  • Robotics troubleshooting (Fanuc, ABB, UR, etc.)
  • Lean / TPM / Reliability Maintenance experience

Responsibilities

  • Operate key CNC equipment, mentor and develop CNC operators, and maintain the work area.
  • Create, test, and optimize G-code and M-code programs using CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, SolidWorks, or Edgecam) for 3, 4, and 5-axis horizontal machining.
  • Determine the most efficient manufacturing sequence, including tool selection, spindle speeds, and feed rates to maximize tool life and part finish.
  • Design and develop custom fixture layouts and setups to secure workpieces during horizontal machining cycles.
  • Interpret complex engineering drawings and blueprints using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure all components meet tight tolerances (often down to .0005).
  • Conduct dry runs and test operations to "validate" new programs, making manual adjustments at the machine controller (e.g., Fanuc, Siemens) to ensure accuracy.
  • Perform first-piece and in-process inspections using precision tools like micrometers, calipers, and bore gauges.
  • Provide troubleshooting guidance to machinists and operators during set-up and production.

Benefits

  • 401(k) retirement saving plan with up to 4% company match, fully vested on day one!
  • Health insurance - medical, dental, vision insurance
  • Life and disability insurance
  • Paid holidays and paid time off
  • Medical and Dependent Savings Accounts (HSA, FSA)
  • Employee Assistance Program
