Sets up and operates conventional and special purpose machines to fabricate metallic parts Applies knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials and layout techniques Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations and set up requirements Measures, marks and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining Selects, aligns and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials on machine, such as saws, mills, grinding, burning and drilling equipment Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors, such as speed, feed, coolant flow and depth and angle of cut Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out of tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls as required Sets up and operates machine on a trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings Verifies dimensions using measuring instruments, such as micrometers, height gauges and gauge blocks May develop specifications from general descriptions and draw sketch of part or product to be fabricated May confer with engineers, production personnel or others to resolve machining or assembly problems Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations. Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs. Maintains continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.

Requirements

  • 1-2 years of manufacturing experience
  • Ability to edit programs for CNC equipment
  • Ability to follow simple written and verbal instructions
  • Good understanding of blueprint reading with regards to grinding diameters (ID &OD) surfaces and simple shapes
  • Must be able to grind part to specified tolerance and use simple measuring devices like micrometers an depth micrometers to measure the part
  • Ability to routinely lift 50 lbs or more on a regular basis
  • Ability to work in narrow spaces, climb, balance, stoop and kneel

Responsibilities

  • Sets up and operates conventional and special purpose machines to fabricate metallic parts
