About The Position

The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in assisted living. The NA provides resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned resident under the supervision of a charge nurse. The NA is considered a member of the nursing team and is expected to know, and will be held accountable for, following infection prevention and control policies and Personal Protective Equipment use. The nursing department provides care 24 hours/day; any of those hours may be an expectation of employment specific to the needs of the department, possibly with varying shifts. These needs change dependent upon staffing availability and resident census. Will be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. Specific shift assignments will be made based on nursing area and by location.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or general equivalency diploma (GED) preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in assisted living preferred.
  • Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing.
  • Satisfactorily completes yearly department specific competency testing and maintains a record of continuing education credits for each year.
  • A minimum of 12 hours continuing education are required annually.
  • Maintains all department specific required certifications.
  • Certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry when applicable.
  • May classify as a Sanford Category II Driver requiring a motor vehicle report and proof of valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Provides assistance with basic health care needs including daily living activities such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing.
  • Obtains and records vital signs and provides psychosocial support and other personal care to assigned resident.
  • Assists the resident in transferring, repositioning, and walking using correct and appropriate transfer techniques and equipment.
  • Completes tasks related to food preparation and dining, while creating a positive dining experience for the resident.
  • Assists residents with meals and snacks, provides water and supplements as appropriate.
  • Aids providers and nursing staff members with procedures and/or collects non-invasive body fluid specimens and gathers vital signs.
  • Administers prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse and within their scope of practice as defined by state regulations.
  • Documents outcomes related to resident care, medication administration, behavior, activity, and dietary.
  • Communicates changing condition, medication follow-up and care related concerns/responses to the charge nurse.
  • Provides housekeeping and laundry services to assist residents with keeping living areas clean and operational.
  • Assists and documents wellness and recreational programs and encourages residents to participate.
  • Delivers age-appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident as per care/service plan.
  • Provides care to tenants with dementia when applicable.
  • May need to provide direction to students when they are providing resident care, treatment, and/or services as part of their training.
