About The Position

The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in assisted living. The NA provides resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned resident under the supervision of a charge nurse. The NA is responsible for assisting with basic health care needs including daily living activities such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, obtaining and recording vital signs, and providing psychosocial support and other personal care to assigned resident. Depending upon location, they may assist the resident in transferring, repositioning, and walking using correct and appropriate transfer techniques and equipment and also provides range of motion and passive exercises. The NA completes tasks related to food preparation and dining, while creating a positive dining experience for the resident. They assist residents with meals and snacks, providing water and supplements as appropriate. The NA may aid providers and nursing staff members with procedures and/or collect non-invasive body fluid specimens and gather vital signs. They may also administer prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse and within their scope of practice as defined by state regulations. The NA documents the outcomes related to resident care, medication administration, behavior, activity, and dietary. They must communicate changing condition, medication follow-up and care related concerns/responses to the charge nurse. Depending upon location, the NA may provide housekeeping and laundry services to assist residents with keeping living areas clean and operational. They provide assistance and documentation with wellness and recreational programs and encourage residents to participate. The NA has knowledge of and delivers age-appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident as per care/service plan. Depending upon the location, they may need to be knowledgeable of providing care to tenants with dementia. The NA is considered a member of the nursing team and is expected to know, and will be held accountable for, following infection prevention and control policies and Personal Protective Equipment use. The nursing department provides care 24 hours/day; any of those hours may be an expectation of employment specific to the needs of the department, possibly with varying shifts. These needs change dependent upon staffing availability and resident census. The NA will be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. Specific shift assignments will be made based on nursing area and by location. Committee meeting attendance may be expected at times. When students are providing resident care, treatment, and/or services as part of their training, any/all employees may be asked to provide direction to the students.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or general equivalency diploma (GED) preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in assisted living preferred.
  • Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing.
  • Satisfactorily completes yearly department specific competency testing.
  • Maintains a record of continuing education credits for each year.
  • A minimum of 12 hours continuing education are required annually.
  • Maintains all department specific required certifications.
  • Certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry if applicable.
  • May require a motor vehicle report and proof of valid driver's license.
