The Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) assists patients with activities of daily living, provides basic nursing care to patients, and assists in maintenance of a safe and clean environment under the direction and supervision of the RN and/or LVN in charge of the team and/or unit. The CNA assists in the implementation and coordination of care based on care plans and nursing diagnoses by providing delegated aspects of care. The primary patients served on the Med/Surg unit are adult and geriatric patients. CNA must be knowledgeable of the special needs of adult and geriatric patients for mobility assistance and skin care. They must possess the patience and understanding needed to deal with the frail elderly who need maximum assistance with ADLS. Occasionally, pediatric patients are admitted. CNA must be cognizant of safety issues and psychological issues connected with hospitalized children.
