About The Position

The Certified Medical Assistant/Medical Assistant is a non-professional staff member who performs duties, both administrative and clinical, obtains clinical information/data, performs clinical CLIA waved lab testing, and testing on medical equipment, necessary for the medical office visit. Communicates effectively with patients/family, ranging from newborn to geriatric, and staff. The responsibility for direct oversight is that of the Physician for which the CMA/MA is working for. Requirements

  • The CMA is a graduate from an accredited medical assistant program, has passed the national examination administered by the National Board of Medical Examiners, and has achieved certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants. Recertification is required every 60 months (5 years) and is accomplished by retesting or continuing education.
  • The MA is a graduate of an accredited medical assistant program, who has not taken and passed the national examination. The MA will be expected to achieve certification within one year of hire.
  • Culturally competent and have the listening and speaking abilities to serve as a communication liaison between the physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant and patient.
  • Current BLS certification or will achieve within six months of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • If certified, maintains certification in Department of Transportation (DOT) and non-DOT drug screening procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Greets patients appropriately and escorts to exam rooms; performs/ prepares documents and reports vital signs, records height, weight, blood pressure.
  • Obtain and record patient history and current complaint(s), including but not limited to history of present illness (HPI) and pertinent review of systems.
  • Maintains/updates/reconciles the patient medical record, including allergies and medications, and enters information into the record.
  • Under the direction and guidance of the Physician/Nurse, may provide age specific education/information to patient and family members.
  • Prepare, maintain, restock, and clean examination and treatment areas.
  • Prepare patient for and assist with routine and specialty examinations.
  • Prepare patient for and assist with procedures, treatments and minor office surgeries, excluding preparation and administration of medication.
  • Answers phone calls, documents patient message and forwards information to nurse and / or Physician. Does not provide medical advice or recommend treatment.
  • Sends patients reminders for follow up.
  • Make referrals by phone to area physician offices and hospitals for tests and consults.
  • Perform specimen collections: venipuncture, capillary puncture, obtains specimens for microbiological testing.
  • Instruct patients in the collection of clean-catch, mid-stream urine specimen and in the collection of a fecal specimen.
  • Perform electrocardiography as ordered by Physician.
  • Perform respiratory testing, such as PFT/Pulse Oximetry, as ordered by Physician.
  • Perform CLIA Waived testing: urinalysis, hematology testing, chemistry testing, immunology testing, and microbiology testing as ordered.
  • Obtain prior authorization(s) for procedures and testing.
  • Routinely send / fax information from clinic fax inbox throughout the day.
  • Follows Infection Control fundamentals r/t: Standard Precautions, good hand washing, disposal of bio hazardous materials, sterile or aseptic technique, disinfection of instruments/equipment, and preparation for autoclaving.
  • Working knowledge and use of computer applications.
  • Scans document into appropriate category of EMR system after completing competency.
  • Maintains and completes medical records by documenting patient activities during visit.
  • Maintains patient confidence and keeps patient care information confidential.
  • Adheres to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal/state/local requirements and regulatory bodies.
