Duke Health Lake Norman Hospital offers a comprehensive range of medical services, including 24-hour emergency care, cardiology, orthopedics, women's services, and surgical specialties. The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in providing direct patient care. The CMA performs routine administrative and patient care supportive duties in a Health System medical practice, assisting medical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients and ensuring the clinic/office runs smoothly.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program strongly preferred.
  • High school or GED graduation required.
  • Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA or ARMA required.
  • BLS required.
  • No experience required for Level I; 1 year for Level II; 2 years for Level III; 3 years for Level IV.

  • Good customer service skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Heavy lifting and the ability to transport stretchers and wheelchair patients may be required.
  • Working knowledge of sterile techniques and special procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and clinic staff.
  • Typing skills and medical terminology knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Takes medical histories and records vital signs.
  • Explains treatment procedures to patients and prepares them for examinations and procedures.
  • Assists medical and nursing staff during examinations and procedures.
  • Collects and prepares laboratory specimens.
  • Performs basic laboratory tests in the clinic/office.
  • Takes electrocardiograms, removes sutures/staples, and changes sterile and non-sterile dressings.
  • Promotes patient/family understanding of the educational content and their involvement in the plan of care.
  • Documents in the patient record.
  • Disposes of contaminated supplies and processes instruments.
  • Telephones prescriptions to a pharmacy and prepares/administers medications as directed by a physician.
  • Greets patients and answers telephones.
  • Schedules appointments and checks out patients.
  • Arranges for hospital admissions and laboratory services.
  • Updates and files patient medical records.
  • Handles billing, bookkeeping, and insurance forms.
  • Orders clinical and clerical supplies and forms.
