About The Position

The CLS III Lead position at Mercy Medical Center involves overseeing the daily operations of the laboratory section, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and providing consultative services to the medical staff. The role requires a high level of technical skill and the ability to manage both the technical and fiscal aspects of the laboratory. The individual will also be responsible for staff competency assessments, quality management, and maintaining laboratory policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • ASCP certification, or equivalent, preferred.
  • Minimum five years of hospital laboratory work experience required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in chemical, physical, biological health science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or other educational requirements stated in CLIA.
  • Current and Valid State License if the laboratory is located in a state where required.

Responsibilities

  • Functions as the department Section Supervisor or Lead, responsible for supervising the daily operation of the section(s).
  • Provides consultative services to the medical staff in the capacity of Technical Consultant.
  • Oversees the section/department performance improvement program and participates in hospital interdisciplinary performance improvement initiatives.
  • Responsible for the technical and fiscal management of the section(s).
  • Oversees the section(s) quality management/assurance program.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Assesses staff competency and completes performance evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Ensures the accuracy of patient results prior to releasing or reporting.
  • Develops, maintains and updates section policy and procedure manuals.
  • Reviews quality control performance ensuring documentation of corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance and either corrects the problem or immediately notifies the Director or Medical Director.
  • Performs a wide variety of laboratory procedures requiring independent judgment using both manual and automated methods in various disciplines.
  • Ensures the performance and documentation of equipment maintenance - daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed.
  • Recognizes age specific differences in expected results for newborns to geriatrics.
  • Ensures that the testing of proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples and that collaboration with other laboratories is prohibited prior to the reporting of proficiency testing results to the appropriate agencies.
  • Ensures the currency of all laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to all department and hospital policies and procedures related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
  • May be assigned responsibilities related to LIS and/or POC.
  • Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director.
