About The Position

The Information Technology (IT) Services strives to be a strategic, innovative, and best‐in‐class IT organization that provides a leading‐edge technology environment for students, faculty, and staff to advance the University's mission, vision, and goals. We seek an exceptional individual to join our IT - Infrastructure Services team as the Cloud Infrastructure Solutions Architect (Systems Administrator III). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to inclusivity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness. The Systems Administrator III is responsible for implementing and supporting cloud services across a variety of computing environments. Leads the deployment of highly available and fault-tolerant enterprise and web-scale software, as well as data center-to-cloud migrations. Key responsibilities include designing decoupled cloud infrastructure, implementing proactive scaling, ensuring disaster recovery and business continuity, and maintaining cloud security and serverless infrastructure. Demonstrates a strong understanding of cloud cost structures and optimizes resources accordingly. Independently implement infrastructure automation using modern scripting languages (e.g., Shell, Python, or equivalents) and utilize configuration management and orchestration tools appropriate to the environment. Apply architectural frameworks such as Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Domain-Driven Design (DDD), and leverage infrastructure-as-code and automation platforms in alignment with industry standards. Responsibilities include integrating third-party Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) providers into multi-vendor environments, managing, and reviewing cloud resources to ensure availability, and troubleshooting technical issues for various departments. Managing directory services and related cloud identity resources, as well as administering and troubleshooting server environments across virtualization and cloud platforms. The Systems Administrator III also supports IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) and PaaS (Platform as a Service) for campus divisions and departments, administers the campus-wide cloud environment, and assists with backup and disaster recovery tasks. Coordinate with campus technicians on upgrades, maintenance, and troubleshooting, and arrange scheduled downtime as needed. Plans, tests, and deploys cloud applications to ensure performance and reliability. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of relevant experience. Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Working independently under general supervision, designs and implements systems solutions that meet the university's evolving needs.
  • Applies advanced technical knowledge and expertise in complex systems administration to provide technical advice on systems.
  • Demonstrates advanced discernment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining system administration solutions.
  • Activities include the conceptualization, development, and implementation of complex systems and infrastructure.
  • Decision making is based on systems administration best practices; system standards; university and information system and security policies, guidelines, and protocols; and university needs and goals.
  • Work is focused on ensuring alignment with overall objectives.
  • Handles multiple work priorities and may provide lead work direction with accountability for results.
  • Thorough and advanced knowledge of operating systems, server administration, scripting languages, virtualization technologies, and cloud technologies.
  • Demonstrated competence in independently applying advanced judgment to resolve difficult and complex system administration problems and issues.
  • Advanced project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple, large, and/or complex projects, including project design and planning; ongoing resource, materials, and time management; and implementation.
  • Advanced analytical skills to understand problems from a broad perspective and discern applicable underlying principles to conceive and develop strategic systems solutions.
  • Advanced skill in mentoring or overseeing the work of others.
  • Ability to partner with business and academic stakeholders to ensure dependent systems meet institutional needs.
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills to effectively convey technical knowledge and procedures as well as persuade stakeholders and management regarding systems design and development.
  • A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment.
  • A valid California driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of five years of experience in a Cloud Engineer, Systems Engineer, or Cloud Architect role with deep understanding of cloud infrastructure concepts including infrastructure as code, cloud security, cost optimization, and multi-cloud and hybrid architectures.
  • Holds industry-recognized certifications such as (Amazon Web Services) AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification.
  • Experience with automation frameworks, CI/CD pipelines, and modern DevOps practices in cloud environments.
