About The Position

The Closing Quality Control Technician serves as a key point of contact for end-of-day specimen reconciliation and quality assurance within the laboratory. This role ensures all samples are accounted for, processed accurately, and verified as error-free prior to laboratory closure. The position operates with a high level of independence and attention to detail during the evening shift.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required; Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Strong computer proficiency and organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory equipment, as applicable to the role.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace applications.

Nice To Haves

  • Medical background preferred, including knowledge of medical terminology relevant to a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Previous experience in a production-based environment is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate proficiency in data entry, specimen processing, and quality control functions, including full understanding of all job duties and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to accessioning, preparation, and reconciliation.
  • Receive and accession incoming specimens during the closing shift by completing electronic requisitions, printing barcodes, and entering data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Validate specimen information, patient demographics, billing details, and test orders for accuracy. Report inconsistencies related to accessioning, data entry, specimen identification, or sample type to laboratory leadership.
  • Identify and resolve specimen-related issues, including missing information, complex test-to-specimen relationships, and compliance concerns.
  • Track and monitor quality control metrics, maintain accurate logs, and collaborate with leadership to ensure high-quality specimen processing and data accuracy. Communicate issues that may impact patient results in a timely manner.
  • Facilitate effective communication between laboratory staff and external stakeholders regarding specimen status, test results, and end-of-day discrepancies.
  • Keep leadership informed of inconsistencies or quality concerns and contribute to performance improvements through SOP development, updates, and quality enhancement initiatives.
  • Complete required documentation accurately, legibly, and within established time frames. Maintain PSC LIS databases to ensure proper specimen processing and reconciliation.
  • Review requisitions and test orders for completeness and accuracy. Validate and verify work completed by other staff members as needed. Provide ongoing training support and assist with shipment preparation to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of specimen testing requirements and compliance policies, including use of translation tables, laboratory computer systems, and directories of services. Communicate pertinent testing and compliance information clearly and accurately.
  • Adhere to all laboratory policies and procedures, including safety standards, confidentiality requirements, HIPAA, OSHA regulations, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated areas. Maintain safe work practices in a biohazard environment.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including coverage of end-of-day specimen processing during staffing shortages and assistance with shipment receipt and delivery.
