About The Position

The Emergency Department at UPMC Somerset is a tight‑knit, resilient team that relies on each other through every shift. We care for our patients like they’re our neighbors—because often, they are. We are seeking a Clinician to join our ED team. This role works primarily daylight with the expectation to cover evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. The Clinician will help lead clinical practice, support staff, guide change, and ensure excellent patient care within a fast‑paced, community‑centered environment.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years experience as a Professional Staff Nurse.
  • If BSN not at time of hire, must be enrolled in a program within one year of hire/transfer date and completed within three years of enrollment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Certs Required upon hire or within six months ACLS & PALS
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
  • Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.

Responsibilities

  • Lead clinical improvement efforts by identifying opportunities, guiding change, and supporting staff through transitions. Provide education during new processes and assist with quality, onboarding, and peer review.
  • Use strong clinical judgment to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients and families, applying the nursing process to ensure safe and effective care.
  • Communicate clearly with patients, families, and the care team, ensuring documentation is complete, accurate, and supports seamless care transitions.
  • Analyze patient needs and safety concerns to make sound decisions. Use critical thinking to guide care throughout each episode.
  • Promote patient safety and satisfaction by following best practices and organizational standards, helping to create a compassionate and healing experience.
  • Share new knowledge, research, and best practices with the team through education, discussions, or presentations.
  • Use performance‑improvement tools to enhance care quality and integrate evidence‑based practices into daily work. Help spread successful improvements across units.
  • Build positive, respectful working relationships and model supportive communication. Coach others on teamwork, cultural awareness, and professional conduct.
  • Mentor and support nurses, students, and new hires by serving as a preceptor and contributing to the growth and development of new preceptors.
  • Maintain professionalism, accountability, and healthy work habits. Perform additional duties and system‑wide competencies as assigned.
