The Clinician Fellow is a registered nurse who provides direct patient care while also taking on enhanced leadership and unit support responsibilities. This role is ideal for nurses who are interested in advancing into leadership and are actively pursuing—or willing to pursue—their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). As a Clinician Fellow, you will serve as a strong clinical resource on the unit, supporting daily operations and promoting best practices for high‑quality patient care. You will act as a role model for the nursing team and play a key role in coaching, education, problem‑solving, and leadership development. Clinician Fellows have direct reports and are responsible for check‑ins, feedback, and ongoing staff support. If you are a registered nurse who frequently serves as a charge nurse, this is an excellent opportunity to formally step into a leadership role while remaining clinically engaged. This position works three 12‑hour shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM), typically Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend and on‑call coverage as needed. The ideal candidate will have at least two years of experience on a Step Down or Med/Surg unit; prior charge nurse experience is strongly preferred. If you are looking for the next step in your nursing career, we encourage you to apply! The Clinician Fellow is a valued step in UPMC's Career Ladder, the final candidate will be placed in the appropriate title and salary based on education and experience. The Clinician Fellow is a highly developed role model of professional nursing practice with focused expertise and accountabilities in one or more of the following: expert clinical practice, teaching/development, and/or evidence based practice. This role partners with management in the achievement of a culture of excellence in professional nursing practice and patient care. The Clinician Fellow, under the direction of the Unit Director or Department Manager, assists in the completion of employee evaluations, selection and hiring of staff, and in performance management. The Clinician Fellow has the authority, responsibility, and shift accountability for the delivery of nursing care through the use of the nursing process. The Clinician Fellow, in collaboration with other health care professionals, applies superior clinical knowledge and skills to achieve quality patient care outcomes. The Clinician Fellow is responsible for providing service-based education and clinical expertise for staff including orientation and training, consultation on practice issues and general coordination of clinical activities on a shift basis. They must demonstrate the knowledge and skills to provide care that is relevant to patients under their care, as well as apply principles of growth and development over the life span. The Clinician Fellow also must possess the ability to assess and interpret patient data needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific needs. The Clinician Fellow demonstrates a commitment to the community and to the nursing profession.
