About The Position

The Comparative Medicine Program (CMP) enhances excellence in research and teaching at Texas A&M through high quality animal care. We provide a variety of services to researchers at the university through standard and specialized facilities. These services include the procurement of animals and animal husbandry supplies, provision of veterinary care, use of CMP surgical facilities, a polyclonal antibody production service, technical support services, and animal use training services. We are seeking a skilled and compassionate veterinarian with strong clinical and technical abilities, experience in laboratory animal medicine, and a commitment to supporting high‑quality research. They will be confident providing medical and surgical care across a variety of species, comfortable managing clinical programs, and adept at reviewing and supporting research protocols. The ideal candidate enjoys teaching and mentoring, works collaboratively with multiple teams, and maintains the highest standards of compliance, animal welfare, and professional integrity. ACLAM board certification or eligibility and experience working with agricultural species are strongly preferred.

Requirements

  • Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) from an AVMA accredited school.
  • Three years of related experience in laboratory animal medicine.
  • Licensed DVM in at least one state.
  • Strong clinical and surgical skills, an interest in teaching and training research experience.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
  • Knowledge of Texas A&M University and system rules and policies.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain professional working relationships.
  • Ability to maintain the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment system or water treatment system.
  • Works to cover shifts, or take emergency call, on evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects.
  • No inhibiting allergies to animals, hay, or dust.

  • Experience with agricultural animals in research or clinical setting

Responsibilities

  • Provides and directs clinical care of research animals including diagnosis and treatments.
  • Performs surgical and medical procedures as needed.
  • Coordinates with staff for clinical services.
  • Establishes and maintains a comprehensive clinical program for research animals.
  • Oversees preventive medicine and enrichment programs for research animals.
  • Reviews research animal protocols and assists principal investigators in research studies, when requested.
  • Supervises assigned staff.
  • Oversees the training in the humane use and care of research animals.
  • Remains current with safety classes and maintains certification or licensure where appropriate.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations (e.g. USDA, OLAW)
