About The Position

Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277-bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia, proudly serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870. CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds) and has 166 beds for individuals in the community needing inpatient care, as well as those in the criminal justice system. The hospital believes in holistic, person-centered treatment, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use. The Clinical Treatment Team Social Worker will provide comprehensive, person-centered discharge planning, treatment coordination, and clinical social work services for individuals served. This includes assessing and identifying discharge needs, collaborating with patients, families, CSBs, and community partners to develop and implement effective discharge and aftercare plans, ensuring timely activation of benefits and referrals, and maintaining thorough, recovery-oriented documentation in accordance with DBHDS and hospital protocols. This role also participates in interdisciplinary treatment planning, delivers therapeutic interventions such as PSR groups, supportive counseling, and education, completes initial and annual clinical assessments, contributes to ongoing evaluation of patient progress and discharge readiness, and engages in continuous professional development while upholding the mission, values, and standards of the Social Work Department through compassionate, respectful, and legally compliant practice.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the principles, theories, practices, services and techniques of social work, preferably with the forensic and/or civilly committed mentally ill population.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated ability to provide case management and coordinate resources for patients.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated ability of advanced assessment skills.
  • Ability and skills in providing individual and group educational/supportive/insight counseling as well as family therapy.
  • Ability to interview and gather pertinent information from patients and family.
  • Ability to individually and in conjunction with interdisciplinary teams, develop goals and implement treatment plans according to patient needs and problems.
  • Knowledge, skills and ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Knowledgeable regarding NASW Code of Ethics.
  • Ability to perform duties at a fast pace with frequent change.
  • Ability to interact with other professionals as a contributing team member.
  • Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited institution is required.
  • Demonstrated professional experience in social work practice, with an emphasis on case management and discharge planning.
  • Working knowledge and applied experience in clinical intake and assessment, treatment planning, and the provision of individual, group, and family therapeutic interventions.
  • Valid driver’s license required, with the ability to safely operate a state vehicle to transport individuals served, as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of forensic mental health is desirable.
  • Prior inpatient social work experience is preferred.
