About The Position

Reporting to the Integrated Health Operations Supervisor (IHOS), the Clinical Support Paramedic will be responsible for the assessment of health and clinical needs and providing clinical advice, utilizing professional clinical judgment, supported by decision support software within the provincial EHS system. Must maintain and be accountable for their own professional competencies through participation in continuing education sessions, successful completion of required skills training, and clinical exposure under the oversight and direction of the Medical Director and College. Requirements

  • Active CPNS registration as an Advance Care Paramedic.
  • ACP - minimum of 5 years recent experience with at least three (3) years in a frontline patient care role in a high volume area
  • ACP in either a high call volume ground ambulance position or emergency department.
  • Must have working knowledge of window-based computer applications and the ability to accurately type 30 wpm
  • Must have or be willing to complete an AEMD course as well as other courses as necessary
  • Must have a good clinical record
  • Must have a good attendance record
  • Advanced patient assessment skills
  • Demonstrated high standards of competence in practices to protect health and safety including clinical governance, infection control and scene safety
  • Excellent understanding and must follow the EHS CPGs, protocols, and policies.
  • Methodical and systemic approach to working including ability to prioritize
  • Ability to convey information in a simplified and easily understandable way
  • Ability to identify, assess and prioritize complex problems

Nice To Haves

  • Current certification/instructor in ACLS, ATLS, PTLS, PALS an asset
  • Completion of a leadership course, an asset
  • Other current and past leadership roles within the organization, an asset
  • Previous experience with tele-triage considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Provide telephone triage, medication advice, health information, patient follow up and implement care packages to a range of individuals in a range of emotional states to specific emergency calls, using Clinical Decision Support Software.
  • Provide clinical advice to Operational staff when required and proactively promote the use of alternative care pathways to operational staff.
  • Provide skilled and effective assessment of patients presenting clinical need, through telephone consultation, with the support of clinical assessment software.
  • Apply critical analysis to the combination of complex information during the care process to provide accurate advice and health information to patients in order to empower them to act upon the advice given.
  • Keep immediate and accurate records of service user inquiries to the service during the consultation.
  • Recognize opportunities for and provide health education during the consultation process referring to Health Care Professionals as required.
  • Practice active listening and analytical skills to identify medical issues and provide treatment plans.
  • Conduct clinical follow-ups.
  • Access databases, email, and approved internet resources and critically appraise sources of information and their evidence base.
  • Act as a clinical resource for internal and external non-medical staff.
  • Provide advice on clinical issues i.e. clinical requirement for inter-facility transports.
  • Undertake audits of the Clinical Desk and produce feedback reports.
