About The Position

Clinical Specialist – Outpatient Orthopedic Physical Therapy The Clinical Specialist for Outpatient Physical Therapy is a clinical leader responsible for providing expert level care to patients, advancing the excellence in patient care at the department and system level, mentoring clinicians, and fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and evidence-based practice environment. This position focuses on an adult and adolescent orthopedic practice and supports professional development across all levels of staff, contributes to programmatic growth, and partners closely with interdisciplinary colleagues to enhance clinical quality, equity, and outcomes. The physical therapy clinical specialist serves as a department liaison to MGH physicians, nurses and other health care providers on a regular basis. Board certification in orthopedic specialty and/or advanced manual therapy training are preferred. The Clinical Specialist demonstrates advanced clinical expertise, strong mentorship, communication and leadership skills, and a commitment to creating a welcoming, efficient, and high-quality experience for patients and staff. This role plays a key part in workforce development, setting clinical standards/protocols and innovation within an academic medical center outpatient setting.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree Related Field of Study required
  • Massachusetts Physical Therapist required [State License]
  • Basic Life Support [BLS Certification]
  • Advanced knowledge of broad range of diagnoses/impairments in content area for individuals requiring therapy intervention.
  • Advanced knowledge of supervisory skills, teaching, and evaluation of staff.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to provide compassionate care to patients.
  • Ability to recognize emergency situations and respond appropriately.
  • PT experience 5-7 years required

Nice To Haves

  • Doctorate Related Field of Study preferred
  • Board certification in orthopedic specialty and/or advanced manual therapy training are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • 70% direct clinical care in a contemporary ambulatory physical therapy practice, promoting high standards of care and clinical quality across diverse patient populations
  • Mentor and support physical therapists at varying stages of professional development, including onboarding, clinical instruction, and ongoing growth
  • Foster a culture of evidence based practice and continuous learning across the department
  • Identify common developmental needs among staff and support individualized and team based development plans
  • Promote teamwork and collaboration within and across disciplines to achieve shared clinical and organizational goals
  • Contribute to program development, physician collaboration, and opportunities for departmental clinical growth and integration within specialty practices and service lines
  • Support inclusive leadership practices by adapting communication and leadership styles to respect diverse backgrounds and perspectives
  • Participate in community outreach and engagement initiatives that align with departmental and organizational mission and values
  • Assist with operational leadership activities, including prioritization of care, regulatory awareness, and performance improvement initiatives
