The Clinical Respiratory Specialist – Complex Home Care is a highly skilled Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) responsible for managing a diverse caseload ranging from traditional sleep therapy to high-acuity ventilator-dependent patients. This role blends advanced clinical care, patient and caregiver education, and strategic relationship-building with hospitals, physicians, and referral partners. The Clinical Respiratory Specialist also serves as a clinical ambassador for Blackburn’s, supporting the growth and expansion of our high-tech respiratory service lines across Central and Eastern Pennsylvania. Essential Functions and Responsibilities Life-Sustaining & Complex Respiratory Care Perform home and facility-based setups, education, and ongoing monitoring for invasive and non-invasive ventilators (e.g., Trilogy, Astral). Support patients utilizing Cough Assist (MI-E), High-Frequency Chest Wall Oscillation (Vest therapy), suctioning, and other advanced airway clearance modalities. Provide high-touch clinical follow-up to reduce hospital readmissions and optimize outcomes for medically complex patients. Sleep, Oxygen & Aerosol Therapy Deliver, set up, and monitor CPAP, BiPAP, and sleep therapy equipment, ensuring compliance with payer and clinical requirements. Deliver and maintain oxygen systems, portable oxygen, and aerosolized medication equipment. Perform pulse oximetry and nocturnal studies as required. Patient Education & Advocacy Educate patients and caregivers on proper use, safety, cleaning, storage, and troubleshooting of respiratory equipment. Review compliance and clinical data, troubleshoot equipment remotely or in person, and collaborate with prescribing physicians to adjust therapy plans as needed. Evaluate patients for additional Blackburn’s services that may support safety and continuity of care. Clinical Business Development & Relationship Management Build and sustain strong professional relationships with pulmonologists, hospital discharge planners, case managers, and referral sources. Communicate clinical value, outcomes, and service capabilities to drive referrals and regional program growth. Serve as a clinical resource and subject-matter expert representing Blackburn’s in the community. Documentation, Compliance & Quality Complete all documentation accurately, timely, and in accordance with Blackburn’s policies, payer requirements, and Joint Commission standards. Actively participate in Joint Commission activities, quality initiatives, and audits. Assist with troubleshooting equipment, exchanges, concentrator checks, and warehouse support as needed, including maintenance documentation. Training & Professional Development Participate in departmental meetings, in-services, and continuing education. Support training for drivers and other staff related to respiratory equipment and patient care. Evaluate new respiratory products and provide feedback to leadership.
