The Clinical Research Specialist will serve as a key member of the DONUT Study team at The Ohio State University College of Optometry. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator, this position oversees day-to-day clinical research operations for the OSU study site within a large, 14-center national clinical trial funded by the National Eye Institute. The Specialist ensures smooth coordination of participant activities, manages research processes, and supports all operational aspects of the Delaying the Onset of Nearsightedness Until Treatment (DONUT) Study. This role requires exercising independent judgment within established guidelines, maintaining high attention to detail, and ensuring compliance with study protocols, regulatory requirements, and university standards. Responsibilities include implementing recruitment and retention strategies; conducting eligibility screenings; scheduling and tracking all participant visits; coordinating exam rooms, research personnel, and equipment; and providing excellent communication and support to participating families throughout the two-year study period. The Clinical Research Specialist will prepare and submit IRB materials, maintain accurate and timely electronic data capture, manage research inventory, including study medications, and ensure proper handling, documentation, reconciliation, and return of study drug supplies. The position also develops participant-focused communication materials—such as newsletters—and oversees shipping of study treatments when required. Additional duties include coordinating vision screenings in local schools to identify potential participants and serving as the primary point of contact for families and community partners engaged in the DONUT Study.
