SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, Dr. Megan Pinkston-Camp, assist in recruitment, acquisition, and analysis of participant information for a multi-site research investigation (Brown University Health, Butler Hospital, and Hennepin Healthcare in MN) of interventions aimed at increasing physical activity among persons living with HIV infection. The research assistant will interview participants to gather information, prepare and maintain the study record, enter data via computer, engage in quality control procedures, engage in weekly team meetings, assist with Institutional Regulatory Board (IRB) applications and documents, and maintain the IRB regulatory documentation. Opportunities for engagement in scholarly activities such as dissemination of findings may also be available. The core Success Factors include: Instill Trust and Value Differences Patient and Community Focus and Collaborate RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides assistance to Principal Investigator to coordinate research activities related to the department’s field of study and investigators specific study. Assists research psychologists in the identification and follow up of participants meeting criteria for inclusion in the research study; ensures protocol eligibility requirements are met. Establishes and/or maintains study record for each participant. Interviews potential participants to explain the nature of the study, elicit cooperation and gather information to complete study consent and questionnaires. Will schedule participant appointments and call participants to complete documentation. May review medical records to abstract information necessary to complete forms. May request and follow up on missing data such as laboratory test results and the like. Monitors adherence to protocol. Collects and organizes participant data into appropriate format to facilitate data entry. Operates computer to enter study information into database. Prepares related graphs and charts or results of data gathered. May participate in quantitative and qualitative analyses of resultant information. May assist in planning research protocols. Prepares and submits paperwork for the IRB. Maintains the IRB regulatory documentation. Participates in weekly team meetings. Reviews literature pertaining to research being conducted to better understand project and gather relevant information. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Bachelor’s Degree in Applied or Life Sciences or related area, including courses in psychology, public health, and / or research methodologies. EXPERIENCE: Three to six months on-the-job experience to become familiar with specific research studies. Knowledge of theory and techniques of research methodology. Organizational skills to organize and prioritize own efforts and to gather research information, format appropriately for computer data entry, prepare and maintain records and reports, etc. Interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients and hospital professionals to gather and exchange information. Technical ability to operate and maintain computer system. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to support participants with consideration of working with individuals from minoritized and underserved backgrounds with varying and cultural backgrounds in each step of the research process. WORK ENVIRONMENT ANDPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The research assistant will work within the Behavioral Medicine Program of the Department of Psychiatry to identify, enroll, and follow up with research participants. May spend much of the time standing and walking between departments, offices, etc. INDEPENDENT ACTION: Perform independently within the department’s policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to the supervisor when clarification of the departmental policies and procedures are required. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None.
