About The Position

The Clinical Psychologist (Behavioral Health Consultant - BHC) will provide psychological services in a primary care setting in accordance with the Air Force Behavioral Health Consultant model. The position requires evidence-based, brief interventions and close collaboration with Primary Care Managers (PCMs). Services are typically short-term, with appointments mirroring the pace of primary care, focused on rapid access and high patient volume.

Requirements

  • Education: Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA-accredited program (or equivalent approved by the Office of the Surgeon General, U.S. Air Force)
  • Completed an APA-accredited internship/residency or one approved by the Office of the Surgeon General
  • Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a clinical psychologist
  • Demonstrated experience in providing brief behavioral interventions
  • Licensure: Must possess and maintain an active, unrestricted license to practice psychology in any U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands
  • Must hold and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross
  • Proof of valid certification must be presented on the first day of work
  • Computer-based training is not accepted
  • Recertification must be maintained at no cost to the government

Responsibilities

  • Participate in and complete Air Force Behavioral Health Consultant training within 90 days of patient contact (extensions permitted if training is unavailable)
  • Provide brief (15-30 minute) cognitive/behavioral interventions within the primary care setting, generally in four or fewer sessions
  • Offer behavioral health classes and/or groups relevant to primary care (e.g., stress management, chronic condition support)
  • Consult on-demand with PCMs regarding patient care and general issues
  • Provide same-day verbal and/or written feedback to PCMs for referred patients
  • Perform clinical duties such as specialist consultations, counseling, teaching, training, and documentation
  • Deliver presentations and training to primary care team members regarding behavioral health and BHC services
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical pathway programs
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record system
  • Engage in military-specific psychological training (e.g., suicide management, PTSD, deployment health)
  • Attend and actively participate in required meetings, huddles, and professional staff activities
  • May supervise unlicensed or in-training providers under direction
