About The Position

Job description: GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the supervision of a physician, observes and performs advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tasks associated with patient care in an urgent care and occupational health. Acts as an assistant to physicians in providing patient care. Complies with all safety and infection control standards. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Medical Center’s Courtesy Performance Standards. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the medical supervision of a Medical Director and attending physicians, and the administrative supervision of the Clinical Practitioner supervisor. Detailed chart reviews will be completed by the medical director periodically. This will include examination for completeness and quality of documentation, documentation errors, medical decision making errors, medication and dosing errors, errors in management of specific illnesses or traumatic injuries, and incorrect or missed diagnoses. DEFINITION: The term Clinical Practitioner will refer to all Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners working within the Hurley Health Services Urgent Care Clinics. RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: Obtains medical history; performs comprehensive physical examination; records pertinent data in medical record system; orders and interprets appropriate laboratory, radiologic, and other diagnostic tests; orders medications and therapeutic procedures. Performs therapeutic procedures such as fracture/joint reductions, splinting, suturing, and abscess incision and drainage. Writes prescriptions as permitted by the State of Michigan regulatory agencies for Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners under the supervision of the attending physician. Reviews diagnostic information and institutes patient dispositions with supervising physician. Provides patient education as directed. Serves as resource person for other staff assigned to similar cases. Participates in continuing education seminars and conferences to maintain licensure and currency in field. Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, react competently, and treat (if appropriate) unique needs of patient age groups served. Provides patient follow up for radiology and laboratory variances. Performs other related duties as required. Utilizes new improvements and/or technology that relate to job assignment. MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an AMA approved Physician Assistant Program. Licensure as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan. Certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. -OR- Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university. Master of Science in Clinical Nursing from an accredited college or university. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse from the State of Michigan. Current certification as a Nurse Practitioner from the State of Michigan. -AND- Knowledge of emergency medicine and disease processes. Knowledge of current diagnostic procedures and treatment modalities. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to conform to departmental performance standards. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, supervisors, subordinates, and Medical Center Staff. Maintain an active position as a member of the Hurley Medical Staff. Maintain an active and ongoing involvement in the Quality Assurance Activities with the Urgent Care Medical Director. NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training and maintain certification throughout employment.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an AMA approved Physician Assistant Program.
  • Licensure as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university.
  • Master of Science in Clinical Nursing from an accredited college or university.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse from the State of Michigan.
  • Current certification as a Nurse Practitioner from the State of Michigan.
