The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist, Emergency Medicine, is responsible primarily for patient care in the Emergency Department (ED). The role involves a mixed patient population, treating both pediatric and adult emergencies. Weekday responsibilities are unit-based, including discharge culture follow-up, order verification, medication therapy optimization, and precepting pharmacy students or residents (PGY1/PGY2). Participation in medical emergencies, including cardiac/respiratory arrest and stroke, is required The specialist works closely with the Emergency Medicine physician residency program and the 24/7 Toxicology Service. Weekday coverage includes morning and evening shifts in the ED, with an approximate breakdown of 75% 2nd shift and 25% 1st shift coverage. Secondary coverage may include intensive care units (ICUs) or Central Pharmacy; distribution of shifts will be determined by skill set and department need. On weekends, decentralized coverage may include ED, intensive care units (ICUs), and Central Pharmacy. The weekend staffing model follows every 4-5 weekend rotation. Each individual must display maturity, independence, initiative, and strong verbal/written communication skills.
