The Pharmacy Intern, under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, as allowed by New York State regulation, performs a wide variety of technical and clinical duties for the hospital. The intern will be responsible for facilitating the development, implementation, and maintenance of systems/programs that promote desirable patient outcomes through the use of appropriate, safe, and cost effective therapies.

  • Ensures safe, appropriate, cost-effective therapies for patients and according to established policies, procedures, and protocols, if applicable, and/or as directed and mentored by a licensed pharmacist.
  • Uses clinical skills to assess medication orders for accuracy and appropriateness.
  • Procures and distributes medication orders per physician or pharmacist request, or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures, and protocols. Under direct supervision of a pharmacist, fills routine patient orders for unit dose carts and prepackaged pharmaceuticals, preparing, compounding and labeling IV admixture, antibiotics, cardiac drips, solutions, irrigations, parenteral nutrition, and chemotherapy.
  • Continuously maintains pharmacy inventory and supplies according to established policies and procedures through assigned inspections, use of automated dispensing units and medication supplies depending on facility. Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations, restocks medications and IV dispensing area, prepackages bulk medications in unit dose packages.
  • Supports in the implementation, and maintenance of Clinical Pharmacy services.
  • Supports and/or provides clinical consultation and clarification to practitioners for their in- and outpatients.
  • Supports the development and/or implementation of treatment guidelines, protocols, formulary changes, and critical pathways as approved and/or appointed by appropriate committees.
  • Reviews medication orders for appropriate dose, duration, frequency, dosage form, indication and drug interactions
  • Supports and/or facilitates the identification, resolution, implementation, and communication of cost-effective medication use issues in collaboration with the medical staff, pharmaceutical care services staff, and/or any other appropriate staff member(s).
  • Supports the institution's pharmacoeconomic efforts. Reviews the use of targeted medications for compliance with current pharmacoeconomic programs.
  • Establishes and interprets patient information - active problem list, past medical history, physical exam data, laboratory data, hospital course, medication history, medication profile, pharmacokinetic evaluation
  • Applies federal and state legal standards surrounding medication use
  • Provides education and information on pharmaceutical care and drug therapy as directed and/or mentored by a licensed pharmacist.
  • Supports and/or assures the provision of accurate, adequate, and timely drug information to those within and outside the system
  • Contributes to the advancement of the profession through peer review for professional journals, publications and presentations at local, state, national and international meetings.
  • Teaches, evaluates and provides direct feedback to student pharmacists completing IPPE rotations
  • Contributes to the quality and effective operation of the Section, Department and System as directed and/or mentored by a licensed pharmacist.
  • Participates in continuous performance improvement and regulatory compliance efforts of the department/service. Takes responsibility for quality improvement efforts and then monitors processes and results.
  • Supports development of policies and procedures for clinical activities when appropriate (e.g., therapeutic interchange).
  • Establishes productive, collaborative relationships with staff members, and within the profession and community.
  • Seeks opportunities to elevate both their personal practice, but also the profession of pharmacy.
  • Conducts as well as provides the opportunity for collaborative research within the system as directed and/or mentored by a licensed pharmacist.
  • Participates in collaborative research in accordance with established Institutional and Federal guidelines.
  • Performs similar or related duties as requested or directed
  • Performs other duties as requested and observed by supervisor or manager.
  • Current, active and in good-standing as an enrolled student in an accredited ACPE-College of Pharmacy Program required
