The largest of the four Duke Healthhospitals with 1062 patient beds, it features comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic facilities, including a regional emergency/trauma center, an endo-surgery center, and more.Schedule Weekdays 8:00 am - 6:00 pm potential closed-door weekend opportunities   Position Summary The Clinical Pharmacist position at the Duke Specialty Pharmacy is responsible for the safe, accurate, and efficient preparation and dispensing of medications within the Duke Specialty Pharmacy Network. This role ensures compliance with all regulatory, accreditation, and organizational standards while supporting high-quality patient care through operational excellence and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Requirements

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in dispensing
  • Knowledge of specialty pharmacy operations, workflow management, and regulatory requirements
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Proficiency with pharmacy management systems and electronic health records
  • Doctor of Pharmacy Degree OR BS Pharmacy Degree
  • With a BS Pharmacy degree, two years of pharmacy practice experience, or acceptable board certification, or completion of an accredited residency program and demonstrated ability to achieve positive patient outcomes in a similar environment is required
  • With a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, no experience is required
  • Licensed Pharmacist or eligible to practice pharmacy in North Carolina

Nice To Haves

  • 3+ years of experience in a retail or specialty pharmacy environment preferred
  • Experience in specialty pharmacy is preferred
  • Experience with specialty pharmacy accreditation standards (URAC, ACHC) preferred
  • Knowledge of payer requirements, prior authorizations, and reimbursement processes preferred

Responsibilities

  • Medication Preparation & Dispensing
  • Accurately review, verify, and dispense specialty and non-specialty prescriptions in accordance with state and federal regulations
  • Ensure medications are prepared, labeled, and dispensed following manufacturer requirements (including REMS and limited distribution drugs)
  • Maintain compliance with payer and manufacturer requirements related to dispensing (e.g., original container requirements, documentation standards, metric requirements)
  • Perform final verification of prescriptions and oversee pharmacy technicians involved in dispensing processes
  • Operational Excellence
  • Support daily pharmacy workflow to ensure timely medication access and delivery
  • Identify and resolve operational issues impacting dispensing efficiency, turnaround time, or patient access
  • Maintain and assist with controlled and non-controlled inventory, including specialty medications with high cost and limited availability
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation standards (e.g., URAC, ACHC) and participate in audit readiness and response
  • Clinical Oversight
  • Evaluate prescriptions for appropriateness, safety, and potential drug interactions
  • Provide drug information and counseling to patients and providers as needed
  • Collaborate with clinical pharmacists, providers, residents and care teams to optimize therapy outcomes
  • Regulatory & Compliance
  • Adhere to all applicable pharmacy laws, regulations, and organizational policies
  • Ensure compliance with REMS programs and manufacturer distribution requirements
  • Participate in internal and external audits, including payer and manufacturer reviews
  • Collaboration & Communication
  • Work closely with pharmacy technicians, pharmacists and the leadership team to ensure seamless operations
  • Communicate effectively with prescribers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals
  • Support training and onboarding of pharmacy staff as needed
  • Support training and teaching of pharmacy students and residents as appropriate
