About The Position

In collaboration with the health care team, the Clinical Nurse Specialist provides expert family-centered clinical care and clinical consultation within her/his area of expertise to improve outcomes and to promote integrated health care that is safe, equitable, timely, effective, and efficient.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the care of complex and/or vulnerable populations through expert direct care, care coordination, and collaboration with patients and families and other members of the health care team. Demonstrates a commitment to patient safety by being knowledgeable about evidence and best practices for safety, speaking up about safety issues, and changing practice to enhance safety. Shares errors or potential errors through system reporting mechanisms and communicates these with appropriate leadership. Demonstrates shared accountability for safe practice.
  • Supports other members of the health care team, including nurses, physicians, and allied health professionals through collaborative clinical practice, education, research/evidence-based practice, and consultation. Acts as a preceptor and mentor to support the development of nurses, students and other health care providers.
  • Facilitates change and innovation for patients/populations within the department, the health care system, and the community. Analyzes and utilizes data, including patient satisfaction data, QI data, other data relevant to specialty populations, and incident report/safety net data to identify opportunities for improvement and to develop a plan of action to improve outcomes.
  • Participates in scholarly activities including research and evidence-based practice. Participates in personal professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs, and seeking appropriate educational offerings. Presents research and evidence-based practice findings to unit staff. Participates in regional/national programs relevant to specialty practice. Develops departmental and hospital policies, procedures, and standards based on the best available evidence.
  • Demonstrates health care informatics competencies to manage patient care, outcome data, and current and emerging health care technology, which includes: Basic computer competency, including the effective use of patient care devices, computers, and computer software programs such as e-mail, word processing, and shared network file space. Information literacy, including the effective use of the Intranet and Internet to find electronic resources for patient care, nursing practice, and evidence-based decision-making; Information management skills, including the effective use of the electronic health record and clinical information systems, the ability to collect clinical data using quality tools, and the ability to discuss, evaluate, analyze, and present outcome data depicted in charts and tables.
