About The Position

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a licensed registered nurse that has graduate preparation (master’s or doctorate) in nursing as a clinical nurse specialist. CNSs are one of four categories of APRNs as identified by the APRN Consensus Model, National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), State Boards of Nursing, American Nurses Association (ANA) and International Council of Nurses (ICN). The role of a CNS provides leadership and clinical expertise within the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS) spheres of impact by utilizing unique and advanced level competencies. The CNS provides expert comprehensive nursing care directly to patients, supports and develops registered nurses at the point of care and serves as a leader in redesigning systems to improve access, quality, and safety in a cost-effective manner. The CNS improves patient care by putting the best evidence and innovations into practice while solving challenging patient care issues and monitoring patient outcomes for clinical effectiveness. The role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist, Adult will have a primary focus on activities in the Medical Surgical, Geriatric, Telemetry, Critical Care, and/or Outpatient/Procedural care areas. This position may require flexibility of hours.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited Clinical Nurse Specialist program required.
  • Master’s Degree (Doctoral Degree [DNP or PhD] preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of work experience as a registered nurse with adult medical-surgical, telemetry, geriatric and/or critical care patient care area/population.
  • Current unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN)
  • Current Basic Life Support Provider (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Provider (ACLS) issued by American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) issued by California Board of Registered Nursing

Responsibilities

  • Directing clinical nursing practice involving the adult/geriatric patient
  • Implements evidence-based or “best practice” guidelines for specific patient population
  • Provides consultation with nursing staff on complex patient issues
  • Coordination and assessment of educational development and clinical competency of the nursing staff
  • Ensuring continued competency through educational programs for the newly hired, newly transferred and experienced nursing staff
  • Provides oversight of comprehensive patient education activities
  • Develops and oversees implementation of departmental specific Policies & Procedures in partnership with nursing leadership, Medical Directors and interprofessional team stakeholders.
  • Assists in identifying performance and outcomes measures by collecting, reviewing and analyzing data. After completion of the data collection, implementing changes related to patient care.
  • Partners with Nursing Research on all research activities related to the adult/geriatric population
