About The Position

Role Summary Howard University Hospital is seeking an experienced Clinical Nurse (RN) – Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), Per Diem Level II . This per diem role is designed for critical care nurses who thrive in high-acuity environments and are committed to delivering safe, patient-centered care through interdisciplinary collaboration. What You’ll Do Provide comprehensive, direct patient care in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care at the bedside. Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary team members to achieve patient care goals. Maintain accurate and timely electronic documentation of patient care and outcomes. Delegate appropriate tasks to licensed and non-licensed support staff. Ensure compliance with infection control standards, medication administration protocols, and controlled substance regulations. Participate in unit-based performance improvement, quality initiatives, and professional practice activities. Support patients and families through compassionate emotional, psychological, and spiritual care. Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA policies and procedures. Engage in ongoing professional development and educational offerings as required. What We Offer Highly competitive per diem compensation Flexible scheduling within defined per diem commitment Professional practice environment grounded in the HUH CARES values Opportunities to contribute to a respected academic and clinical institution Pay + Schedule Pay Rate: $61.00 per hour Shift: Day Shift – 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM Commitment: Three (2) 12-hour shifts per week (24 hours/week) Schedules are established in four (4)-week cycles. Two (2) weekend shifts per month (24 hours/month) are required. Participation in every other major holiday is required, including New Year’s, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Additional coverage may be required for historically difficult-to-fill holidays (e.g., Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day). This per diem role is not benefits-eligible and does not accrue PTO. Participants may be eligible for compensation under the District of Columbia Accrued Sick and Safe Leave Act (ASSLA). Compliance Statements Howard University Hospital requires all external applicants to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to commencing employment. Proof of vaccination may be required. Vaccination may be available at a designated Howard University Hospital location if offered. Requirements

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the District of Columbia.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications through the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of recent ICU experience

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Nationally recognized nursing certification in critical care or assigned specialty is highly desirable.
