The Clinical Nurse (CN) is a Registered Nurse (RN) who provides direct, evidence-based patient care, adhering to the California Nursing Practice Act, regulatory requirements, standards of care, and hospital policies. This role encompasses the full nursing process, including patient assessment, data interpretation, care planning, implementation, and evaluation. The CN is responsible for coordinating care with other providers and educating patients and families on managing their care and preventing complications, always prioritizing family-centered care. As a professional, the CN monitors the quality of nursing care and is accountable for their own professional development, including maintaining licensure, Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, and current knowledge relevant to their assigned patient population. Clinical Nurses also contribute to the nursing profession by teaching and sharing expertise within their unit or the hospital. This position is represented by the Committee for Recognition of Nursing Achievement (CRONA), an independent union for Registered Nurses at Stanford Health Care and Lucile Packard Children's Health Stanford.
