This role is a key member of the interdisciplinary team and is responsible for assessing patients, administering treatments, managing medications, and coordinating care for individuals with complex acute and chronic endocrine conditions. In addition to endocrinology, this position supports the broader multispecialty clinic, including Allergy, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Pulmonary, and Rheumatology, providing exposure to diverse specialty populations and expanding clinical expertise.   A strong focus of this position is patient education and chronic disease management. The Clinical Nurse II helps patients understand their diagnoses, treatment plans, and medications, while supporting self-management of conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, adrenal and pituitary diseases, and other hormone-related conditions. This role also serves as a clinical leader within the practice, contributing to operational improvements and quality initiatives that enhance patient care and clinic efficiency while fostering a collaborative and supportive team environment.

Requirements

  • Work requires graduation from an accredited Associate's Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma program.
  • All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) are encouraged to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date but must complete the BSN program within seven years of their start date.
  • Twelve months of appropriate clinical experience is required. At a manager's discretion, employees with 6 months of experience who are exceptional performers may be eligible for this level.
  • This position is open to Clinical Nurse II, III, and IV candidates based on experience and qualifications. Clinical Nurse II team members may be eligible to apply to Duke’s Clinical Ladder following successful completion of Duke’s 90-day evaluation period.
  • Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and monitor patients using the nursing process in an ambulatory setting; administer medications and treatments per provider orders; and assist with specialty-specific testing and procedures.
  • Assist CMA/RMA staff with rooming patients, medication reconciliation point of care testing, and lab courier processes as needed to support clinic flow.
  • Document care accurately in the electronic health record and communicate significant findings to providers.
  • Support clinical operations across Endocrinology, Allergy, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Pulmonary, and Rheumatology services, gaining exposure to a broad range of specialty conditions.
  • Educate patients and families on diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, and lifestyle modifications.
  • Provide instruction on glucose monitoring, insulin and injectable therapies, hormone therapy, and other specialty-related treatments.
  • Reinforce plans of care to promote patient understanding, safety, and long-term self-management.
  • Conduct and support nurse visits, including patient education and management of specialty therapies as appropriate
  • Assist other nursing personnel in the delivery of patient care and serve as a clinical leader within the clinic, modeling professional nursing standards and supporting continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary team members within a team-based care model focused on safety, efficiency, and high-quality patient outcomes.
  • Participate in operational, population health, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance outcomes and clinic efficiency.
  • Act as a preceptor and support the development of staff and formal learners.
  • Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs, and seeking appropriate educational opportunities.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
