About The Position

The Clinical Nurse I is a professional care provider who is responsible and accountable for coordinating and providing safe, effective individualized nursing care for patients and supportive care to significant others. Nursing care involves application of the nursing process and utilizing technical skills for patient care delivery. These activities require nursing judgment based on application of scientific principles of nursing, problem solving and teach/learning.

Requirements

  • Must be licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois (Must provide proof at time of interview if already obtained)
  • Three (3) years of nursing experience in an acute care or hospital setting
  • One (1) year of nursing experience in Critical Care or Same Day Surgery in an acute care hospital, level 1 trauma hospital or teaching hospital
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (Must provide proof at time of interview if already obtained)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification must be obtained within six months of hire date (Must provide proof at time of interview if already obtained)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Supports (PALS) certification must be obtained within six months of hire date (Must provide proof at time of interview if already obtained)

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) from a college or university
  • Certification in clinical area of specialty
  • Two (2) years of full-time work experience in Critical Care or Same Day Surgery Nursing
  • Knowledge of emergency decontamination procedures.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures (e.g., fire/evacuation internal/external disaster plans).
  • Knowledge of medicals and IV fluids and correct admission based on patient age and clinical condition
  • Demonstrate competence in the safe and effective use of clinical equipment

Responsibilities

  • Identifies, plans, and cares for the total needs of patients taking into consideration the age specific needs of patient in assigned area of responsibility
  • Makes appropriate and timely decisions in a crisis of emergency situation
  • Works and communicates effectively with a variety of individuals
  • Provides general direction, guidance, and coordination of patient care given by other levels of nursing staff
  • Applies knowledge of standard operating policies and procedures
  • Operates equipment correctly and safely necessary for providing patient care in assigned clinical area
  • Performs cardio-pulmonary resuscitation activities
  • Applies principles of infection control and safety
  • Evaluates patients presenting complaint at triage
  • Performs admission assessment on assigned patients upon arrival to the department
  • Obtains assessment information from patients/significant others as appropriate
  • Collects assessment data as a basis for formulating nursing diagnosis and provide appropriate age specific care relative to the following factors, biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care capabilities, safety, infection control, learning needs, ability to manage continuing care needs after discharge, perform peripheral IV cannulation aseptically, and administer medications safely and carefully, specifically cardiac medications
  • Performs ongoing and scheduled reassessments according to Divisional/department standards
  • Performs transfer assessments on assigned patient when transferred in or out of the department
  • Establishes nursing diagnosis, problems, desired outcomes, and interventions based assessed needs
  • Collaborates with patient, significant other, and other healthcare team members in planning care during hospitalization and for discharge
  • Develops nursing plan of care that is consistent with the therapies of other disciplines, based on patient care and nursing practice standards, considers the culture and spiritual values, and considers patient age specific needs relative to these factors, biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care capabilities, safety, infection control, learning needs, and discharge planning needs
  • Communicates with patient and significant others the nursing plan of care
  • Performs interventions in a competent, skillful and safe manner
  • Prioritizes interventions according to patient needs
  • Applies principles of growth and development across life span in providing care appropriate to patient's age specific needs in adult and geriatric
  • Provides education to patients and significant other based on assessed learning needs. Provides appropriate Perioperative Teaching and Postoperative discharge instructions
  • Performs the technical aspects of care according to established practice standards (procedures, treatments, IV/Blood administration, medical administration)
  • Demonstrates competence in the safe and effective use of clinical equipment
  • Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other lifesaving interventions
  • Demonstrates competence in applying the principles of standard precaution, isolation and asepsis
  • Evaluates patient's responses to interventions
  • Modifies and implements interventions as appropriate
  • Re-evaluates patient's response
  • Records accurately, concisely, and legibly in paper form or electronic, the following information: assessment/reassessments, plan of care, interventions, and patient's responses.
  • Signs documentation with legible signature and classification in paper form and electronic with correct computer sign in
  • Performs charge nurse/team leader responsibilities competently when assigned· Plans and coordinates patient care activities
  • Identifies problems and recommends solutions
  • Delegates nursing tasks based on the needs of the patient and competence of staff
  • Establishes priorities based on the changing patient care needs
  • Demonstrates effective working relationships with all health care team members, patients and families.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of hospital wide services and departments and make appropriate referrals as indicates
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate accurately, clearly and concisely, orally and in writing

  • Communicates pertinent information to patient, physician, nurses and other healthcare team members as appropriate

  • Maintains certification as required in special areas of practice
  • Renews professional license in a timely manner
  • Attends safely, infection control in-services and maintains Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification annually
