Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Successful completion of annual mandatory education requirements.
  • Three to five years nursing experience required.
  • Current valid Registered Nurse (RN) License, valid compact multistate license, or a temporary permit while awaiting licensure required.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire, required within 3 months of hire.
  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate and interact with patients, family members, hospital personnel, and co-workers.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work assignments.
  • Ability to learn, retain, and utilize computer skills that are required for department and hospital information system.
  • Knowledge of databases.
  • Knowledge of standard computer applications including Microsoft Office and electronic medical record software.

Nice To Haves

  • Masters (MS) or Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) preferred, nursing focus preferred.
  • Three years of experience in Surgical Services preferred.
  • Current American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
  • Current American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides guidance to individual staff members to define and integrate Best Care practice models for designated patient populations throughout the continuum of care. (Consultation and Resources, Professional Model of Care) Mentor staff in developing/reviewing/and individualizing the plan of care to address the patients' nursing care needs for optimum patient care outcomes. Uses current knowledge in nursing practice based on standards and research literature to assist staff in establishing appropriate plan of care. Uses current nurse sensitive quality indicators and unit-specific PI data to demonstrate measurable outcomes.
  • Facilitates individual's integration of theory, research, and critical thinking in the care planning for their defined patient assignment. (Nurses as Teachers) Facilitates use of evidence-based practice in patient care and delivery of care. Participates in continuing education and remains current on issues related to process. Promotes critical thinking and research to enhance professional daily practice. Knowledgeable of current research related to clinical practice specialty. Evaluates research for application and implementation. Conducts research as needed based on hospital clinical priorities.
  • Establish an ongoing learning assessment instrument, in conjunction with the management team, to identify and plan appropriate staff development programs. (Quality Improvement, Professional Development) Assist in the development of action plans to develop staff and improve the quality of care. Collaborates with team of professionals (Staff Development Nurse, Clinical Nurse and/or Service Leader) to conduct annual educational needs assessment, analysis of performance improvement data; and assist in the development of actions to improve patient outcomes. Assesses, develops, implements and evaluates educational offerings and opportunities using adult learning principles and appropriate educational methodologies. Evaluates and revises curriculum based on evidence-based practice, standards and guidelines and changes in environment. Facilitates/coordinates the initiation of, adoption of, and adaptation to change. Participates and/or facilitates interdisciplinary committees that influence identified changes. Communicates and transitions curriculum to identified personnel for further implementation. Provides feedback to learners and organization related to the effectiveness of learning and learning activity. Communicates outcomes of programming to leadership and/or identified committees.
  • Serves as role model for unit staff through expert knowledge and application of nursing process and critical thinking skills. (Quality of Care, Image of Nursing) Acts as a change agent to improve outcomes and promote professional growth by facilitating/coordinating the initiation of, adoption of, and adaptation to change. Assess daily routines of staff to promote patient safety activities. Assess staff documentation to identify items affecting PI indicators. Serves as a content expert and presenter on topics based on area of expertise and knowledge.
  • Support unit staff in the planning of the patient's care, and demonstrate prioritizing patient problems according to the impact upon patient's health status. (Autonomy) Facilitate staff in prioritizing time management activities to accomplish responsibilities in appropriate and necessary period. Assists staff in identifying processes that promote high quality, cost-effective patient care. Provide education to staff for specific learning needs on an individual or group basis.
  • Orientation of new staff to unit or process Team of professionals (Staff Development Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)/Continuing Nurse Education (CNE), Learning Center and/or Service Leader) partner to facilitate competency development in critical thinking, communication and technical skills. Assist new employees in skill building. Coordination of orientation maps in partnership with Service Leader, Preceptor and Learning Center.
  • Demonstrates ability to individualize patient care in the age-specific population being served. Demonstrate ability to identify opportunities for, and give individual customer service/patient care, according to customer/patient needs.
