Perform day-to-day clinical physics and dosimetry activities related to the operations of the Florida Cancer Specialist Radiation Oncology Centers under the direction of the Director of Medical Physics. The physics and dosimetry team provides technical services to meet the organizational mission of high quality and safety in the delivery of effective and efficient clinical radiation oncology care. This includes consultation with physicians, as well as treatment plan development and implementation in collaboration with members of the radiation oncology team (i.e. physicians, dosimetrists, therapists, and nursing staff), and quality assurance of treatment delivery and systems. Travel between radiation oncology centers (approx. 25 miles) may be required. Demonstrates working knowledge of all facets of role, relevant regulations, and organizational and departmental policies and procedures. Performs other duties and projects as assigned. Performs all duties in accordance with regulatory requirements and organizational policies and procedures.

  • Provides technical consultation to the dosimetrist in the department.
  • Assists in the training of the Dosimetrist and Simulation Therapist.
  • Acts as the liaison between physics, physicians, and technical staff in matters pertaining to the treatment and proper set-up of treatment parameters per department policy.
  • Provides periodic machine calibration review to comply with state requirements and quality control.
  • Participates in the annual evaluations/calibration of all therapy/diagnostic machines in compliance with all regulatory agencies and in a timely manner.
  • Performs appropriate testing to assure proper function of the accelerator due to maintenance repairs or suspicion of malfunction.
  • Maintains proper documentation of all quality assurance tests and required reporting according to department standard operating procedure and physics procedures using approved forms and processes.
  • Collects data and documentation of survey and quality control reports to comply with State of Florida requirements and other regulating agencies.
  • Performs dose calculations of implanted radionuclides, intracavitary and interstitial implants.
  • Generates computer dosimetry of the radioactive sources using appropriate filtration factors and other characteristics of the radioactive sources.
  • Maintains proper documentation of sealed sources for inventory, calibration, disposal and use in compliance with all regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains the appropriate documents, licensure, and updates as required by the facility, state, and regulating agencies.
  • Supports all on-site Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives including but not limited to - daily team huddle, weekly chart rounds, monthly technical reviews, CQI committees and sub-committees.
  • Offers input when purchase of new equipment is necessary or needed to enhance the level of expertise within the department and the services provided.
  • Supports the development of new treatment technologies in consultation with the Director of Medical Physics.
  • Carries out treatment planning in collaboration with the Radiation Oncologist, Dosimetrist, Simulation therapist and Radiation Therapist.
  • Fulfills requests for assistance from the nursing staff in matters related to brachytherapy treatments, or other nursing related procedures.
  • Completes physics calculations and treatment plan review as per SOP.
  • Provides input and on-site support for planning and addition of new services.
  • Assumes personal responsibility for professional development and ongoing education (CEU's) to improve current skill and knowledge levels to maintain required certification and licensure (12 CEU's annually meets standard).
  • Provides daily input, support and communication to clinical team so that departmental work is performed in a timely, efficient, and knowledgeable manner.
  • Follows established work procedures and processes that support company and departmental standards, procedures, and strategic directives.
  • Provides continual monitoring of processes and procedures. Report findings to physics team designee.
  • Assist with projects from inception through implementation and assessment. Lead and facilitate discussions.
  • Responsible for suggesting methods to improve area operations, efficiency, and service to both internal and external customers.

  • M.S. or Ph.D.
  • Eligible for ABR certification in therapeutic radiologic physics.
  • Florida Licensure is mandatory.
  • At least 2 years of clinical experience and a strong commitment to the highest clinical standards.
  • Clinical knowledge of linear accelerator systems, treatment planning system such as Eclipse TPS, Aria RV, Portal Dosimetry and GammaMed HDR or equivalent types of equipment is required.
  • Demonstrate highly developed interpersonal, teamwork, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of AAPM TG reports.
  • Clinical knowledge of Brainlab Exac Trac and Variseed TPS or equivalent types of equipment is desired.
