About The Position

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to performs the duties of Clinical Laboratory Technologist Trainee. Under direct supervision, for a period of no longer than twelve months, participates in an agency sponsored training program designed to develop knowledge, understanding and professional clinical and environmental laboratory skills used for testing specimens for biological and chemical agents related to event of terrorism, infectious disease outbreaks, and other public health emergencies.

Requirements

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in medical technology from a recognized college or university; or a bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university in one of the chemical, biological, or physical sciences, supplemented by one (1) year’s professional clinical laboratory experience.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year experience testing clinical microorganisms using clinical microbiology techniques, including gram staining, DFA, inoculation, plate reading, and MALDI-TOF analysis.
  • One (1) year of experience using standard laboratory equipment such as biological safety cabinets, analytical balances, and centrifuges.
  • Thorough knowledge of performing quality control testing and the regulatory basis for maintaining a quality assurance program in an accredited laboratory.
  • One (1) year of experience performing standard laboratory techniques such as pipetting, streaking for isolation, use of a microscope, and running assays for microorganism identification.
  • One (1) year experience using laboratory related software programs such as a laboratory information management system.
  • Extensive knowledge of CLIA regulations for diagnostic testing in a high-complexity clinical testing laboratory.
  • One (1) year experience interpreting laboratory reports in a clinical diagnostic or public health laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Performs analytical testing on clinical and environmental specimens for Food and Waterborne disease outbreak detection, bioterrorism select agent detection and Rabies detection, reports results.
  • Performs analysis on specimens to detect the presence of organisms or conditions using fully automated, complex analyzers.
  • Identifies methods and prepares clinical and environmental specimens for appropriate testing.
  • Provides assistance to other units.
  • Performs and documents participation in the proficiency testing program.
  • Handles, sterilizes, and disposes of infectious waste in accordance with the approved guidelines and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonable within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
