About The Position

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to perform the duties of Clinical Laboratory Technologist 1. Under direction, performs the duties of the CLIA technical personnel as defined by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) 42CRF 493.1449(d) rules for the Clinical Microbiology, Rabies and Laboratory Response Network for biological threat (LRN-B) sections. Performs complex and specialized clinical testing, interprets, and reports results on clinical samples.

Requirements

Requires a bachelor’s degree in medical technology from a recognized college or university; or a bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university in one of the chemical, biological, or physical sciences, supplemented by one-years (1) professional clinical laboratory experience.

Nice To Haves

One (1) year of experience testing clinical samples using culture identification, molecular techniques, including PCR, and chemical analysis.
One (1) year of experience using standard laboratory equipment such as biological safety cabinets, analytical balances, and centrifuges.
Thorough knowledge of Biosafety level 3 containment and practices.
Thorough knowledge of performing quality control testing and the regulatory basis for maintaining a quality assurance program in a clinical laboratory.
One (1) year of experience performing standard laboratory techniques such as pipetting, streaking for isolation, use of a microscope, and running biochemical assays for bacterial identification.
One (1) year of experience using laboratory related software programs such as a laboratory information management system.
Extensive knowledge of CLIA regulations for diagnostic testing in a high-complexity clinical testing laboratory.
One (1) year of experience interpreting laboratory reports in a clinical diagnostic laboratory.

Responsibilities

Conducts Laboratory experiments in the bacteriology lab.
Performs direct fluorescence Rabies antibody assays (DFAs) on specimens submitted for routine and emergency testing.
Provided assistance to other units of the lab.
Performs and documents quality control of testing procedures and preventive maintenance of equipment.
Performs Category A and B packaging and shipping specimens after certification.
Participates in approved proficiency testing procedures that serve to measure the quality of test reagents and technical proficiency.
Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
