The Clinical Laboratory Scientist performs diagnostic testing on patient samples to aid physicians in the diagnosis and /or monitoring of various disease states and/or drug use. Follows standardized procedures in the preparation and analysis of patient specimens. Analyzes test results for accuracy, acceptability and critical limits (when applicable).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in biological, chemical, clinical or medical laboratory science.
  • Associate degree in clinical laboratory science.
  • Physical stamina, including standing for long periods, walking, bending and reaching to perform tests and managing equipment.
  • Ability to perform repetitive manual tasks using hands and fingers for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to handle small tools, instruments and laboratory equipment with precision.
  • Must be able to wear PPE, such as lab coats, masks, gloves, and eye protection.
  • Ability to handle chemicals safely.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Works collaboratively with team members, both within and outside of the General Laboratory department, to identify, troubleshoot and resolve issues.
  • Performs diagnostic testing procedures in multiple clinical specialties, including but not limited to, hematology, immunology, general chemistry, toxicology and urinalysis.
  • Prepares solutions, reagents, standards and controls in accordance with the laboratory’s documented standard operating procedures.
  • Prepares samples for analysis using manual testing platforms, as well as high volume, automated instrumentation.
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment, ensuring that calibration and maintenance functions are performed as required in the laboratory’s standard operating procedures.
  • Reviews and interprets tests results.
  • Enters test results into the LIS, within the scope of assigned and authorized functions, as defined in the laboratory’s documented procedures.
  • Notifies physicians and other healthcare providers promptly of critical lab results, following established protocols for reporting and communication.
  • Responds promptly to voicemails and/or e-mails received in the laboratory.
  • Performs corrective action when a test system fails to function within the laboratory’s and/or manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Maintains written documentation of all corrective action performed.
  • Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control (QC) protocols, ensuring that all tests meet regulatory standards and guidelines.
  • Participates in proficiency testing, internal audits, external audits/inspections and other quality assurance activities.
  • Maintains documentation and records required for regulatory compliance.
