The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) works under the supervision of the Section Supervisor or Lead. Under General supervision, this role contributes to the quality of patient diagnosis and treatment by performing technical and complex laboratory analysis in one or more sections of the Laboratory. The CLS recognizes deviations from expected results, analyzes problems, and modifies procedures to eliminate technical problems. They serve as a resource person for other hospital staff by answering questions and solving problems for peers and others. The CLS may be asked to assume the responsibility of a Section Supervisor or Lead in their absence. This position performs other laboratory duties as assigned, assisting physicians in the diagnosis of disease and treatment of patients by performing technical and complex laboratory tests, following established laboratory procedures. The CLS may work in various areas including Chemistry, Bench Chemistry, Blood Bank, Hematology, Histology, Microbiology, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, and Urinalysis. Responsibilities also include performing quality control procedures, documenting test results, taking appropriate actions to correct out of control results, and documenting those actions. The CLS serves as a resource for others, resolving technical irregularities, and correlating new procedures. They may be asked to supervise personnel and technical operations in a laboratory section when an on-site supervisor or Lead is absent. The role involves performing instrument checks and preventative maintenance on laboratory instruments, making minor repairs if needed, and documenting all work performed. The CLS reports normal and abnormal test results as established by Pathology and Hospital procedures, uses laboratory computers for various tasks such as editing, inquiring, receiving specimens, entering test results, and printing results. They receive patient specimens, prepare them for analysis, and collect certain specimens. Adherence to established Hospital safety standards and guest relations policies is required.
